Miami is blessed by gorgeous beaches and swaying palms, but we do also have tornadoes and wildfires; and some areas prone to extreme lightning and thunderstorms. Immediately after you’ve moved in can be a good time to make some changes around the home that can help prepare you for natural disasters and severe weather. For those looking to renovate, consider the use of wind-resistant materials in doors and on the roof. These are not guaranteed to prevent the most extreme damage caused by tornadoes, but they will certainly help in the more common mild and moderate category of weather events. Ensure external doors have at least three hinges and consider installing storm shutters. Be sure to trim trees regularly and keep gutters clear so that fires are less easily spread. Finally, don’t forget basic safety features like smoke alarms and fire extinguishers.

Having an emergency evacuation plan for your family and animals is essential, and remember to check you have the correct type and amount of home insurance, for Miami is a great place to live but it’s not immune to natural disaster and unpleasant weather. Plan now and stay safe.
